A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN INTERN

 

The typical day of an intern really depends upon the needs of the ministry that arises that day. That being said, all volunteers are expected to work as much as possible, usually exceeding an 8-hour day and more than 5½ days a week. Our summers are packed with opportunities to serve.

 

Most weekdays began with completing morning chores, breakfast and team devotions before the workday begins and conclude with preparations for the next day, personal reflections and individual devotions.  Saturdays are usually the time we catch up on laundry and other personal responsibilities and enjoy a little recreation.   We usually “hail-in” the inbound mission teams and “bid-farewell” to the outbound crew on Saturday.  Most of Sunday is spent in worship and fellowship with our inner city church family, orientating inbound mission teams, trying to catch a little rest and preparing for the excitement of Monday.

 

Interns not only do the day-to-day work of the ministry.   They spend a great deal of time orientating, acclimating, hosting and leading the weeklong inbound mission teams.  Most interns will work primarily with our URBAN OUTREACH CENTER’s Day Camp for inner city children or in our community-based programs (soup kitchen, case management, housing, workforce development, etc.).  However, they may have ancillary assignments within the community, at the SANCTUARY OF HOPE, working with our CHARITABLE SUPPLY CHAIN at our international warehouse or on our HOPE TRUCKS. 

 

You will encounter all of the human emotions.  You will experience stress and frustration and have it relieved through understanding and fulfillment.  You will fail and succeed.  You will realize the absolute essentialness of the spiritual disciplines, fortitude, courage, character, ethics, loyalty, commitment and life-long learning.  You will learn to value and find strength in the differences in others and appreciate your own peculiarities.
